![]() NEWCASTLE City Council general manager Lindy Hyam says she has solved the garbage collectors' dispute for the time being, after talks with the United Services Union.Ms Hyam announced the deal in a statement late yesterday, saying the council and the union had jointly agreed on a moratorium on changes to the garbage service.The announcement came an hour before councillors were due to meet behind closed doors without senior staff to discuss progress in the council's broader sustainability review."The settlement is underpinned by a commitment by Ms Hyam to approach councillors to obtain a moratorium on the past motion to market test waste services by competitive tender," said a council statement issued late yesterday."A motion is expected to be presented by Ms Hyam to the first available council meeting."The council adopted a motion put by Cr Aaron Buman on November 18 last year to "market test" the waste services by putting them to competitive tender. ![]()
